VTE Risk Assessment data collection – 2012-13 Quarter 3

The tenth set of quarterly statistics on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment in England, produced by the Department of Health have been published according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of VTE Risk Assessments carried out on adult admissions to NHS funded acute care are as follows:

  • Of the 3.4m adult patients admitted to NHS funded acute care between October and December 2012, 94.2% of these received a VTE risk assessment on admission, a slight increase compared to Q2 2012-13 (93.9%).
  • In Q3 2012-13, the proportion of admissions receiving a VTE risk assessment was slightly lower for NHS acute providers (94%) than Independent Sector providers (98%), although NHS acute providers carried out around 97% of all VTE risk assessments.
  • At SHA level, performance varied from 92.7% in North East to 97.2% in East of England during Q3.
  • There has been a steady increase in the proportion of providers of NHS funded acute care, from 47% in July 2010 to 94% in December 2012.
