VTE Risk Assessment data collection: Quarter 1 2013/14 (April to June 2013)

The twelfth set of quarterly statistics on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment in England, produced by NHS England, was released on 6th September 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
 

Key Points

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of VTE Risk Assessments carried out on adult admissions to NHS funded acute care are as follows:

  • Of the 3.4 million adult patients admitted to NHS funded acute care between April and June 2013, as reported in this data collection, 95% of these received a VTE risk assessment on admission, a slight increase compared to 94% in Q4 2012/13.
  •  In Q1 2013/14, the proportion of admissions receiving a VTE risk assessment was slightly lower for NHS acute care providers (95%) than IS providers (98%), with NHS acute care providers carrying out around 97% of all VTE risk assessments. 
  •  At NHS Region level, performance varied from 96.3% in the North of England and London to 97.1% in the Midlands and East of England during Quarter 1 2013/14. Overall, all the regions achieved the 95% goal in this quarter.
  • In Q1 2013/14, 259 providers (out of 316 providers who submitted data) reported that at least 95% of adult admissions were risk assessed for VTE.
