VTE Risk Assessment data collection: August 2013

The August 2013 data on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment in England, produced by NHS England, were released on 8th November 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Key Points

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of VTE Risk Assessments carried out on adult admissions to NHS funded acute care are as follows:

– Of the 1.1 million adult patients admitted to NHS funded acute care in August 2013, as reported in this data collection, 95.7% of these received a VTE risk assessment on admission, similar to 96.0% in July 2013.

– In August 2013, the proportion of admissions receiving a VTE risk assessment was lower for NHS acute care providers (95.6%) than IS providers (98.2%), with NHS acute care providers carrying out around 97.5% of all VTE risk assessments.

– Overall, all the regions achieved the 95% goal in August 2013. At NHS Region level, performance varied from:

  • 96.7% in the North of England, similar to 96.9% in July 2013;
  • 97.2% in the Midlands and East of England, similar to 97.4% in July 2013;
  • 96.7% in the South of England, similar to 97.0% in July 2013;
  • 96.6% in London, increasing slightly from 96.0% in July 2013.

– In August 2013, 271 providers (out of 317 providers who submitted data) reported that at least 95% of adult admissions were risk assessed for VTE, compared with the 268 providers (out of 313 providers who submitted data) in July 2013.
