Dementia Assessment and Referral data collection 2013/14 Quarter 3 (October 2013 to December 2013)

This is the publication of the Dementia Assessment and Referral data collection in England by NHS England for the period covering Quarter 3 (October-December) in 2013/14 in England. It was released on 5th March 2014 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Key Points

The key results for data collected on the number and proportion of patients aged 75 and over admitted as an emergency for more than 72 hours who have been identified as potentially having dementia, who are appropriately assessed and, where appropriate, were referred on to specialist services are as follows:

  • 73 trusts achieved 90% in all three measures, an increase from 67 trusts in Q2 2013/14.
  • 82% of admitted patients were initially assessed for potential dementia in Q3 2013/14, an increase of 3 percentage points from 79% in Q2 2013/14.
  • Of the patients initially assessed and found as potentially having dementia, 89% were further assessed, the same percentage as in Q2 2013-14.
  • Of the patients who were further assessed and in which the outcome was either positive or inconclusive, 88% were referred on to specialist services, a decrease of 3 percentage points from 91% in Q2 2013/14.
  • The percentages of trusts in Q3 2013/14 achieving 90% or over of their emergency admissions for each measure were:
    • 61% of the trusts carried out initial assessments for cases of dementia, an increase from 57% in Q2 2013/14;
    • 71% carried out further diagnoses, an increase from 65% in Q2 2013/14;
    • 74% referred cases on to specialist services, an increase from 68% in Q2 2013/14.
  • The number of data returns submitted by NHS providers of acute funded care has increased slightly to 145 in Q3 2013/14 from 144 in Q2 2013/14.
