I started my nursing career in 1999 at Staffordshire University and predominately worked within Critical Care Services. I was lucky enough to have been given the option to work in many hospital Trusts, including, Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust and University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
I am currently the Lead Nurse for Family Aftercare within the Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT) Directorate at NHS Blood and Transplant. I am responsible for the running of the Donor Records Department which provides Donor Family aftercare to donor families, work alongside the ambassador coordinator for organ donation and responsible for the development of the donor family care services across the UK. I have the opportunity to support the aftercare for donor families after their selfless consent to allow their loved one to donate, work alongside external stakeholders to help build a better service and work alongside the many Specialist Nurses for Organ Donation that support families through the donation process.
I started work at NHS Blood and Transplant in 2008 as one of the first Specialist Nurses for Organ Donation following the Organ Donation Taskforce recommendations. I was based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and later went on to develop the Donation services within Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust. In 2012 I was successful in securing the position of Team Manager for the Midlands Organ Donation Services Team, overseeing the management and development of the Specialist Nurses and Service to hospitals in the Midlands. During my time as a Team Manager I was given the opportunity to develop my leadership and management skills with both internal development courses and also external opportunities such as MA modules and Cross Sectional Leadership exchange. In 2017 I was given the exciting opportunity to cover for the Lead Nurse Service Delivery for ODT, this was an excellent opportunity to further learn about ODT and build experience from within other areas of the organisation.
NHS Blood and Transplant cares about its employees. There are many development opportunities and options to further explore other areas within the organisation outside of your normal working area. Opportunities are provided such as external development courses, internal and external conferences where you are encouraged to participate in abstract and poster submissions. NHS Blood and Transplant also provide excellent Health and Wellbeing management, encouragement to participate in centre activities as well as participating in external promotion events that not only promote the work we do in saving and improving lives but also allows for excellent team building.
