Job title: Infection Prevention Specialist nurse

Place of work: Leeds Community Health Care Trust

I am an infection prevention nurse that works in Leeds community.  I am a mum to 2 children aged 8 and 11, and wife to a great husband, thankfully he’s a shift worker and great with the iron and washing up so I can keep busy with lots of other things. We live with our 2 dogs and 6 cats in Bradford.

I have been a nurse since 1989 and initially was an Enrolled nurse trained in Romford, Essex.  I joined the RAF in 1992 and converted to be a registered nurse whilst serving in Swindon. I was lucky to have overseas postings in Germany and Cyprus but my favourite place was the Falkland’s. I did 14.5 years and loved it, my passion for Infection prevention started with the RAF as I was a flight nurse and responsible for the Air Transportable isolator which is used to bring back highly infectious people in the air.  I flew around the world repatriating ill patients and saw some amazing places, however made me realise how amazing the NHS is and what we have as a service as attended many medical facilities our service people were cared for in when overseas. I left the RAF in 2006 after having my first daughter.  Eventually moving back to Bradford from Swindon in 2007.

For a number of years I have worked in acute and secondary care around west Yorkshire in Infection Prevention.  After being made redundant a few years back I worked in the commercial sector for 2 years as a nurse trainer but returned to the NHS 2 years ago, this is where I started tweeting and saw the advantages of using social media in a professional capacity.

I am an active member of the Infection Prevention Society and will be the Yorkshire Branch coordinator early next year.

I am a primary school parent governor and known by the kids at school as nurse Jo, so lucky enough to share some of the messages with these children.

I love been creative and designed the LCH Flu mascots with my girls and like to keep busy crafting things.  My aim is to try get fit, I would like to start running and by adding it to this may give me that extra push to start C25K.
