Patient/carer or NHS Staff: NHS staff
Job title: Chief Executive
Workplace: Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust
My name is Mark Cubbon and I am Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. I began my career in the NHS as a nurse 26 years ago and worked in a variety of nursing roles before moving into general management.
Before taking up the post of Chief Executive in Portsmouth I worked in senior level roles in a number of London Hospital Trusts before going to work for the NHS regulator, NHS Improvement as Regional Chief Operating Officer for the Midlands and East.
Being Chief Executive of a hospital is something I consider to be a great privilege. In Portsmouth we have over 7,000 members of staff and I am immensely proud to work with each and every one. I see it as my job to support them to provide the best possible care to our patients each and every day.
Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is the largest non-teaching hospital trust in England providing both acute and specialist services, including a designated cancer centre, the Wessex Kidney Centre and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We are also one of the largest hospitals working with the Ministry of Defence to provide care for serving military personnel and veterans and we are extremely proud of our strong military history.
First and foremost my aim is to put the patient at the heart of every conversation I have and every decision that I make with my leadership team. I’m also passionate about leadership development and want to see staff at all levels and from all backgrounds given the skills and opportunities to become leaders in the NHS. I hope I can shed a little light on what it’s like doing what I consider to be the best job in the world.
