I am Head of Product for NHS Horizons
I’m also a NHS patient with a congenital heart defect
My name is Olly, and I was born with a congenital heart defect. As a child, I had various procedures, including open heart surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital. I’m now 42 and work for the NHS, having previously been a producer at the BBC and senior manager in the charity sector. I’m married and dad to two kids.
Because of my heart condition, I have been on beta-blockers since 1999 and have had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) since 2005 — which is monitored remotely via a device placed in my bedroom. I am seen regularly by the Grown Up Congenital Heart (GUCH) team at Barts Heart Centre and will likely have further surgery in the future.
