Richard Jenkins – Chief Executive Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
I have the great privilege of working for the NHS as both the Chief Executive of a hospital trust and as a consultant physician. My personal journey from medical school through training as a junior doctor to a consultant role then took a slightly unexpected direction as I found myself in a range of medical and managerial leadership roles. I’ve been lucky to learn from some excellent role models and have also benefitted from a range of development programmes. I really enjoy the varied challenges of the CEO role and am fortunate to work with so many excellent and dedicated colleagues at Barnsley Hospital. I’m immensely proud of the hospital, the many people and professions who contribute to running it, and the services we provide to our community.
The CEO role is increasingly concerned with working across the local health system with other hospitals, primary care, community services and local authorities. I have a range of partnership roles across the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw region which provide different challenges to the day job! I’m very interested in how a district hospital can take a broader and more proactive role in the health and well-being of their staff and local population than just the traditional one of illness management.
Outside of work, my time is occupied by my family, my dog Nellie and trying to keep middle age at bay.
