@NHS from 25/12/16 to 30/12/16
Job title: Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Staff Nurse
Place of work: Birmingham Children’s Hospital
I am a 26-year old newly qualified paediatric nurse from Birmingham City University, currently working on the Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Prior to nursing I was a Sport & Exercise Science graduate from the University of Wolverhampton, but switched career paths after losing my younger cousin to Neuroblastoma in 2012. Caring for him during his time in hospital showed me just how passionate I was about children’s nursing and although discouraged in the past, I was challenged to follow it through.
I am fortunate to have experienced life inside Birmingham Children’s Hospital from the perspective of a family member for years before my nurse training began. My personal experiences have had a positive impact on the approach I now take as a nurse, having been a recipient of care under similar circumstances.
It is a privilege to be able to do for others what was done for my family, as a part of the amazing team who inspired me to pursue my dream.
Every year since 2013, my family put on a Dee’s Trust fun day for all in memory of my younger cousin to raise money for Neuroblastoma UK. Our mission is ‘to inspire before we expire – raising awareness of Neuroblastoma and making dreams come true’.
