I’m Shafi Ahmed and I am a consultant laparoscopic colorectal surgeon, working at the Royal London Hospital, specialising in colorectal cancer.
I was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh and was raised in East London after coming to the UK at the age of 4. I am one of four siblings. I graduated from Kings College Hospital Medical School in 1993. I completed my training in general surgery in London and was appointed as a Consultant surgeon in 1997 at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. I undertook a period of research exploring the genetics of colorectal cancer and obtained a PhD.
I am a passionate teacher and educator. I was awarded the Silver Scalpel award in 2015 as the best national trainer in surgery by the Association of Surgeons in Training and am also an Associate Dean at Barts and the London Medical School. I am an elected as a Member of Council at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
I am married to Farzana who is a GP working in Plaistow, London and we have just celebrated our 20th anniversary. We have two children; Usmaan, aged 14 and Zarina, aged 13.
My main other interest is football. I have a season ticket at West Ham United and am also known to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of 80’s music!
