Patient/Carer or NHS Staff: Non-Executive Director
Condition or job title: Professor of Healthcare Research and occupational therapist
Place of treatment/care or workplace: University of Nottingham and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust
Hello, my name is Avril and I’m Professor of Healthcare Research in the School of Health Sciences in the University of Nottingham. I trained as an occupational therapist (OT) in Belfast (a long time ago!) and have worked clinically, in education and in research. I’m really proud to be an OT and an Allied Health Professional (AHP) and have never regretted this amazing career choice.
My role as a Professor is largely research focused. My interests are centred around rehabilitation broadly but particularly improving the lives of people with stroke and neurological conditions. It’s a really exciting time to be in rehab research and our team are involved in some fabulous studies with other researchers, patients and carers across the UK and internationally.
I’m also a Non-Executive Director (NED) at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. In this position, I’m particularly interested in patient care, NHS research and generally flying the flag for AHPs. I enjoy this role enormously and it also keeps me up to date with what happens at the coal face of the NHS.
Outside work, I’m married to a GP and have three children. I love travelling, am a member of a book club and I try and drag myself through some exercise classes a couple of times a week.
