Interactive videos improve referrals

GPs in Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire are being helped to improve patient referrals thanks to interactive videos based on real-life cancer consultations.

Developed by the Cancer Vanguard, Gateway-C is an online platform that gives them access to a series of educational films developed by GPs and patients. GPs can access flexible training courses around their clinical commitments with courses on early diagnosis of lung, colorectal and pancreatic cancers, and new modules in lymphoma, skin and brain cancer already in development. There are also modules to support GPs in dealing with cases of colorectal and end-stage lung cancer.

Feedback has shown 95% of GPs feel the platform has already helped them with referrals and the project has been shortlisted for an award by the Health Service Journal.

Dr Liam Hosie who took one of the courses said, “I have spoken to a number of my GP partners who have also completed the learning modules and they all agree that this has been one of the most useful educational experiences they have had. There is evidence that the learning has already begun to change practices.
