East of England Digital Champions Primary Care Awards 2021

The East of England region has launched its digital champions primary care awards. Celebrating the work of health and social care individuals, teams and organisations that have gone above and beyond the call of duty, to provide the best possible experience to patients using digital and online tools.

Please note: Nominations for these awards are closed and listing to reopen in October for the EoE Digital Primary care awards 2023.

The NHS Long Term Plan commits that every patient will have the right to be offered digital-first primary care by 2023/24. Digital technology can be used to transform the way patients can access and receive the care they need.

NHS England is supporting primary care to provide digital access to primary care services, so patients can easily get the advice, support and treatment they need using digital and online tools, in addition to the traditional routes.

These digital tools are being integrated to provide a streamlined experience for patients, and quickly and easily direct them to the right digital or in-person service.

The digital champions primary care awards 2021 will celebrate the achievements of this progress across the EoE region.

There are four categories of awards:

1. Engaging with patients to redesign services

This category is to award excellence in engaging with patients in redesigning primary care services to take advantage of digital tools. This can involve anything from communicating with patients about how to best use digital tools, to co-designing solutions with the public, to working with patient engagement groups is shaping your service.

2. Using digital technology to understand demand / resourcing and improve primary care staff’s lives

This category is to award excellence in using (or adapting to) digital enablers in ways that bring benefits to practice staff. This includes better understanding demand; redesigning your practice’s processes; and making your practice staff’s working lives easier.

3. Redesigning GP practice processes to improve patient access and experience, using digital tools

This category awards excellence in using digital tools to make access to general practice easier and quicker. We know that most practices are now blending online, video, face to face and telephone consultations. Have you tried something bold and different to improve access, with measurable results? Has your working process changed radically to get the greatest benefit? Are you getting great feedback from patients and staff? What have you done to increase patient’s understanding on how to use digital access routes?

4. Integrating with the wider system – Trust, Primary Care Networks (PCNs) or Integrated Care Systems (ICS)

This category seeks to reward excellent integration within the wider health and social care system, using digital enablers. We know that digital tools can link together various venues of care: between practices, with wider primary care, across urgent care providers, and between primary and secondary care. Do you know of someone who has been innovative in this space, and so helped bring the system or locality closer together? The benefits can be to communication, relationships, knowledge, and patient experience.

An application pack has been created to support individuals, teams and organisations to submit a nomination for the awards. This includes communication leads/teams in NHS provider organisations and clinical commissioning groups, who provide or support the delivery of health and social care in England.
