This is the tenth of a set of fifteen guides produced by the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement covering 3 themes: General Improvement Skills, Process and Systems Thinking and Personal and Organisational Development.

The Guides provide practical advice for use by anyone who wants to include service improvement in their work and are applicable to all areas of health care relating to service improvement.

This guide builds on the Improvement Leaders’ Guide to Process mapping. It provides a better understanding about why there are so many interruptions to a patient’s journey and gives more ideas about how to help them flow through our health care system with minimal delays and disruption.
