Background

The first 55 care makers were recruited before the Chief Nursing Officer’s Conference in 2012. These care makers learnt about the national vision and strategy; Compassion in Practice (2012). They made a commitment to supporting frontline implementation and delivery through the promotion of the vision Compassion in Practice (2012) and the 6Cs associated with that vision.

Care makers are ambassadors for the 6Cs, creating a unique link between national policy/strategy and the frontline. The aim was to capture the ‘spirit’ of London 2012, learning from the way Games Makers were recruited, trained and valued then instilling this energy and enthusiasm into a role which would promote the values and behaviours of the NHS.

Initially aimed at students and newly qualified staff, the care maker programme is now open to students and staff at all levels and disciplines within a health or care setting.
