Chesterfield Royal Hospital has significantly boosted theatre productivity by implementing the Care Co-ordination Solution (CCS), part of the NHS FDP.
This digital tool has optimised theatre time, enabling earlier patient care. Between April and December 2024, an additional 232 patients were seen, a 3.7% increase compared to 2023.
Viewing the implementation as an improvement project led to a 5% rise in scheduled theatre sessions.
The CCS supports better theatre utilisation and outcomes. Notably, in ENT, it helped reduce list overruns and increase patient treatment numbers.
Previously, 78% of lists overran by 56 minutes on average; now, only 14% exceed by more than 10 minutes.
Average daily cases rose from 2.8 to 3.5, with 50% of lists now accommodating 4 or more patients.
The CCS aids scheduling and provides insights for further improvements, with plans for wider implementation. Anaesthetists find it invaluable for workflow, ultimately cutting elective care waiting lists.
“What we’ve started to do is use the information that the CCS provides to work with local theatre list teams.
“Their experience of what it’s like on a given day, coupled with that really rich and insightful data, truly opens up the opportunity to change how we work.”
