Community Healthcare Operational Data Flows

The Community Healthcare Operational Data Flows is a pilot testing daily collection of a core subset of the Community Services Data Set (CSDS). CSDS is a patient level, output based, secondary uses data set delivering person-centred information for children and adults who are in contact with publicly funded community health services. The data is collected from providers of community services that are funded and/or provided by the NHS or local authorities. It aims to improve the timeliness of data available for care planning, operational management and patient outcomes. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Healthcare Operational Data Flows Acute collection

The Healthcare Operational Data Flows Acute collection is a daily collection of patient data from NHS Trusts. It supports NHS delivery plans for the recovery of NHS waiting lists, improving patient flow and care coordination through provision of more timely data across the system. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Patient Level Information and Costing System Data Collection

The purpose of the Patient Level Information and Costing System Data Collections is to support NHS England’s Costing Transformation Programme by collecting and analysing patient level costings to improve the management of health care services. The data is received from NHS Acute Trusts, Mental Health Services and NHS Ambulance Trusts. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Virtual Wards

Virtual wards (also known as hospital at home) allow patients to get the care they need at home safely and conveniently, rather than being in hospital. The NHS is increasingly introducing virtual wards to support people at the place they call home, including care homes. This is a collection of data from NHS Trusts that provides consistent data to assess progress in scaling services and build evidence about their effectiveness. Data is gathered on clinical effectiveness, patient safety, patient and carer experience, staff experience and resource use for virtual wards. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Cancer Waiting Times

The national Cancer Waiting Times data is a collection from providers of NHS cancer care. As a patient moves through the stages of their treatment pathway, data on referrals, treatments and diagnosis are derived from care records locally. It is used to monitor performance against nationally set cancer targets for referrals, diagnosis and treatment and plan service improvements. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

NHS App User Identifiers

The data set is a combination of direct identifiers of an NHS App User (NHS number and NHS login ID) which is then pseudonymised before being transferred to another National Instance of the FDP, where the data is analysed by NHS England to provide high level statistical information, and assess NHS App service usage and equality impact in line with the NHS App Directions 2023. National Digital Channels

National Digital Channels data set has been developed by NHS England analysts to deliver reporting and insights to understand performance and usage of NHS App, NHS UK and NHS Login (the National Digital Channels). Previously, NHS England held data required for analysis from the NHS App, NHS UK and NHS Login on different platforms. This data is collected and analysed under the NHS Login Directions 2021 and NHS App Directions 2023.

Diagnostic Imaging Data Set

The Diagnostic Imaging Data Set is a central collection of information about diagnostic imaging tests carried out on NHS patients, extracted from local Radiology Information Systems and submitted monthly. It supports secondary uses such as monitoring access, quality of care, trends, and outcomes. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Emergency Care Data Set

The Emergency Care Data Set is the national data set for urgent and emergency care. It allows NHS England to provide information to support the care provided in emergency departments including understanding capacity and demand and help improve patient care. The data set includes information about why people attend emergency departments and the treatment they receive. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Personal Demographics Service data set

The Personal Demographics Service is the national authoritative database of NHS patient demographic data, such as name, address, date of birth and NHS number for each person registered for, or in receipt of, health and care services commissioned by NHS organisations in England, Wales and the Isle of Man This data set is used to link data across different data sets to support analysis for approved purposes. The data is processed and linked to other data sets under legal directions from the Secretary of State.

Corporate Reference Data Library

The Corporate Reference Data Library is a collection of reference data sets, providing users with a centrally maintained source of reference data. Examples of data tables include code lists for referral types, organisation codes, hospital sites and organisational boundaries. It is Operational Data and is not Personal Data.

Hospital Episode Statistics

Hospital Episode Statistics contains details about admissions, outpatient appointments and historical accident and emergency attendances at NHS hospitals in England. It is used to analyse hospital activity for monitoring and improving the management of health and care services and supports a range of statistical publications. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Medicines Dispensed in Primary Care

NHS England collects patient level data about medicines dispensed and claimed for in community settings (predominantly community pharmacy) from the NHS Business Services Authority. It is used to deliver comprehensive data about medicines dispensed or supplied and to provide intelligence about the safety and effectiveness of medicines. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.

Secondary care electronic prescribing and medicine administration

NHS England collects patient level data for medicines prescribed and administered by hospitals and other secondary care providers in England. The data set is analysed by NHS England to support medicine optimisation and build intelligence on the effectiveness and safety of medicines. This data set is collected under a legal direction from the Secretary of State.
