Guidance on conditions for which over the counter items should not routinely be prescribed in primary care

This policy guidance provides recommendations for items that are available over the counter (OTC) and should not be routinely prescribed in primary care because:

  • there is limited evidence of clinical effectiveness for the item
  • the item would be prescribed for a condition that is self-limiting and will clear up on its own without the need for treatment
  • the item would be prescribed for a condition that is appropriate for self-care.

It is an opportunity for prescribing healthcare professionals, integrated care boards and organisations that commission services to continue to improve patient outcomes and deliver value for money.

The efficiencies delivered could be used for other higher priority areas that have a greater impact on patients, support improvements in services and/or deliver NHS transformation.
