South Asian Heritage Month: Our North West stories

Sharmila Kar, Director of the North West BAME Assembly and Joint Director for Equality, Inclusion & Engagement at Greater Manchester Integrated Care and Manchester City Council, shares an introduction to South Asian Heritage Month.

South Asian Heritage Month 2023 is all about celebrating the stories that make up our diverse and vibrant community. The theme for this year is ‘Stories to Tell’

Our stories are what make us unique, and they connect us to each other in profound ways. Whether you express yourself through art, writing, music, fashion, or food, there are so many ways to share your experiences and celebrate your heritage.

During South Asian Heritage Month 2023, we want to explore a range of themes, from identity and community to gender, faith, and family. These themes are not meant to be restrictive or exclusive, but rather to provide a framework for you to share your story and connect with others who may have similar experiences. The month was established to honour and celebrate South Asian history and culture. It is an opportunity for everyone to appreciate the countries in South Asia and learn new things about their heritage.

When is South Asian Heritage Month?

South Asian Heritage Month runs every year from 18th July – 17th August, ending on the anniversary of Partition.

The Indian Independence Act received royal assent from King George VI on 18 July 1947, and the Radcliffe Line, which divides India, West Pakistan, and East Pakistan, was published on 17 August, by Cyril Radcliffe (date lawyer).

Which countries are in South Asia?

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • India
  • Maldives
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Sri Lanka

When did South Asian Heritage Month start?

The first South Asian Heritage Month event was conceptualised and launched by the South Asian community in the UK in July 2019 at the House of Commons.

The Grand Trunk Project, The Partition Commemoration Campaign, City Sikhs, and Faiths Forum for London worked together to establish the initiative.

Why is South Asian Heritage Month important?

Along with providing learning opportunities for others, the month enables people of South Asian heritage to reclaim their history and identity by sharing their own stories and experiences. Please go get in touch with us so we can share your stories with our assembly members.

What does it mean to people of South Asian heritage?

For me personally its about celebrating my heritage because it is an integral part of who I am. The NHS has always been built by people of many backgrounds coming together and people of South Asian heritage have played a fundamental role in our nation’s history and development. It is a time for us to reflect on our contribution, which is immense and it will continue to be so.
