Education Strategy Group

Overview

The Education Strategy Group (ESG) reports to the Palliative and End of Life Care Network Delivery and Oversight Group through the ESG Chair. The Delivery and Oversight Group sits within the Palliative and End of Life Care (PEoLC) Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) as part of NHS England.

The purpose of the Education Strategy Group (ESG) is to operate as a collaborative group to influence quality by ensuring the Health and Social Care workforce is enabled to provide excellent care and patient and family experience through education appropriate to their role. As part of the Network’s ongoing commitment to education and training the ESG meets quarterly to ensure education programmes are robust.

One of the ESG’s main aims is to provide a consistent approach to provide benchmarking and sharing information regarding the Network funded initiatives around education. From 2015 – 2017 the programme of education was delivered against local delivery plans and included Advance Care Planning, Core and Intermediate Communication skills training and symptom control.  Using evaluations submitted by each locality, a final report was submitted to Health Education England: MPET final report

Education funding from 2017 to the present was provided on a North West footprint to continue to ensure consistency in education and training. A new collaborative was formed by the Education Hubs in Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and South Cumbria to develop the education programme and oversee delivery. This North West Coast Learning Collaborative’s programme continued to deliver on Advance Care Planning and Communication Skills using a Train the Trainer model over a 2-year period.

The main aim of the programme is to enhance the skills and confidence of key professionals delivering end of life care in all settings around advance care planning and having “difficult conversations” across the North West Footprint (Greater Manchester & Eastern Cheshire, Cheshire & Merseyside, and Lancashire & South Cumbria).

End of Life Care education for Paramedics in collaboration with the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) is also being delivered through the Education Hubs.  The EGS has also developed a Communication Skills Quality Framework for Core and Advanced Communication Skills.
