Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health has never been more in the spotlight and in particular the emotional needs of infants, children and young people. In March 2015, the Mental Health Taskforce published Future in Mind, detailing 49 recommendations for improving children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. The report outlines the need to move away from the traditional tiered approach to mental health services through a whole system approach, bringing together health, education, social care and the voluntary sector.

In February 2016 the Taskforce produced the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health, which further sets out the vision for all age mental health services. £1.25billion has been allocated nationally to support this work. There is a real opportunity to work collaboratively across all sectors to ensure children and young people receive services that are based around their individual needs.

Linked with Future in Mind, areas were asked to produce Local Transformation Plans (LTPs), detailing how they would implement the required changes to improve children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. These plans were developed through local partnerships, with input from children and young people themselves.

To support the implementation of the report’s recommendations the East Midlands Clinical Network for Maternity and Children’s and Mental Health developed a self-assessment tool to enable local areas to assess their readiness to meet the recommendations made in Future in Mind.

Further information on the national programme can be found on the NHS England website.

CYP MHW Steering Group

The Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing ICS Partnership drives the activity of the Network. The Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Steering Group meets every two months and has representation from stakeholders from across the system of CYP services. It is responsible for transformation of services as set out in the Future in Mind policy, as well as more recently for the Integrated Care System.

CYP MHW Events

We host a wide range of events throughout the year that seek to engage organisations in our priorities where we provide leadership, advice and evidence to support the transformation of CYP services.
