NHS England North procurement of orthodontic services

Orthodontic treatment (usually with braces) is most often used to improve the appearance and alignment of crooked, protruding or crowded teeth and to correct problems with the bite of the teeth.

A number of contracts to provide orthodontic services in the north of England are due to come to an end soon. In order to secure on-going provision for patients, NHS England North proposes to carry out a procurement process to award new contracts in line with the Regulations.

The service specification for the new contracts will follow the national Guide for Commissioning Orthodontics (published in September 2015).

The procurement of these new contracts is being managed across the NHS England North Region (made up of the Cheshire and Merseyside, Cumbria and the North East, Lancashire and South Cumbria & Yorkshire and Humber local offices) to ensure consistency across the region. Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership will be following this same process but at a later date.

Although the procurement is being managed on a regional basis, contracts will be split into geographical lots so that potential providers need only to submit tenders to provide services in the areas they are interested in. The proposed contract lots have been informed by local orthodontic needs assessments to ensure greater equity of service provision across the region.

Engagement has taken place with patients, potential providers, clinicians and other key stakeholders to inform the procurement of these new contracts.  See below for responses to the key themes/queries raised during the during the engagement process:
