We are supporting a first national cohort of organisations to join the global Pathway to Excellence® programme.
Pathway to Excellence® is a ‘nursing excellence’ framework that aims to create a positive practice environment for nursing staff. This internationally recognised programme supports organisations to place nursing and midwifery staff at the centre of the decision-making process, ensuring collective ownership in developing and improving practice. Our support will allow up to 14 organisations to undertake the programme.
The programme already has a proven track record in England with Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust delivering impressive results. The trust has successfully embedded six Pathway standards across the organisation and has delivered reductions in registered nursing vacancy rates, pressure ulcer rates, nursing complaints, and has delivered a substantial improvement in its National Inpatient Survey results.
The Pathway to Excellence® programme aligns with the Chief Nursing Officer’s national vision to establish an England-wide collective leadership model with a focus on transformational leadership, research and innovation: “One of my key priorities as CNO is to empower all nurses, midwives and care staff to be involved in shared decision-making and collective leadership within their organisations. Every single one of us has experience and influence that can be used toeffect change and to contribute to delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan. The Pathway to Excellence® programme is recognised globally as enabling nursing excellence, instilling a strong sense of professional pride and offers proven strategies to help ensure that the care that we deliver to our patients and populations is of the highest calibre”.
The Regional Chief Nurses are currently considering which trusts should be invited to apply to take part in the first national cohort of the Pathway to Excellence® Programme. We expect to announce successful trusts at the end of August 2019.
