Responsible officer and appraisal networks

The region hosts responsible officer and appraisal networks in Newcastle, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Manchester. Responsible officers and appraisers can attend any network date below or join another region (each network date is split half day for responsible officers and half day for appraisers). For information about or to confirm your attendance at these networks or for more information about the conference please contact one of the Project Support Officers at

Peer Review Pilot

NHS England is unlike other designated bodies, in that it appointed 31 responsible officers (ROs); 1 national, 4 regional and 27 area team. It is important that as one designated body, systems and process are consistent as far as possible and ROs are confident in these systems.

The North region have developed a peer review model with the intention of supporting NHS England responsible officers in meeting their responsibilities within The Medical Profession (Responsible Officer) Regulations 2010 and Amendment 2013 as NHS England becomes established as one organisation.

This paper was developed specifically to provide area teams of NHS England (North) with a model of invited peer review of their revalidation process. Area teams across NHS England can utilise this model should they feel it is useful.

This peer review model was piloted and tested by three area teams in the north region during 2013/14. The evaluation of that pilot has informed changes and improvements to the process which will be utilised in 14/15 peer review cycle.
