NHS England publishes this guidance on behalf of the National Medical Examiner for England and Wales.

This document sets out the National Medical Examiner’s guidance and expected standards for medical examiners. It is issued under the National Medical Examiner (Additional Functions) Regulations 2024.

The introduction of medical examiners is part of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) death certification reforms.

Summary

From 9 September 2024 all deaths that are not investigated by a coroner must be reviewed by NHS medical examiners. Government announced this change, which is part the new Death Certification Reforms, on 15 April 2024. This is a diagram that gives an overview of the new process.
