Commissioning for Value

Commissioning for Value: Comprehensive data packs to support CCGs and NHS England in the regions

NHS England is committed to giving CCGs and NHS England in the regions practical support in gathering data, evidence and tools to help them transform the way care is delivered for their patients and populations.

NHS Right Care now sits within NHS England, and working with Public Health England we are providing a suite of materials to support effective ‘commissioning for value’. This includes a range of comprehensive data packs and online tools.

The information in the packs will be of particular interest to CCG clinical and management leads with responsibility for finance, performance, improvement and health outcomes; to NHS England regional team leads; and to commissioning support teams who are helping CCGs with this work. A range of additional free support to accompany the data is set out within each pack.

To access all the Commissioning for Value packs produced for your CCG, please click on the regional links here. A description of each pack can be seen below.

Focus packs – April/May 2016

These focus packs provide more detailed information on those highest spending programmes previously covered by the earlier Commissioning for Value packs. The areas covered are: cancer; the CVD family of conditions including renal, stroke and diabetes; maternity and early years; mental health and dementia; musculoskeletal and trauma; neurology; and respiratory. The packs include a wider range of outcome measures and information on the most common procedures and diagnoses for the condition in question. They help CCGs begin work on phase two of the RightCare approach ‘What to Change’ by using indicative data to identify improvement opportunities. Supporting tools and information are available below.

Refreshed ‘Where to Look’ packs – January 2016

These packs build on earlier Commissioning for Value packs. They update the information in the original data packs from October 2013 and the Pathway on a Page packs from November 2014. The use of this localised information as part of the annual planning cycle is encouraged. It will support discussions about prioritising areas for change and utilising resources, and will help local leaders make improvements in healthcare quality, outcomes and efficiency. Supporting tools and information are available below.

Integrated Care Pathways pack – February 2015

The Integrated Care Pathways packs seek to demonstrate the extent to which complex patients utilise resources across programmes of care and the urgent care system. Supporting tools and information are available below.

Pathways on a Page – November 2014

These packs provide in depth data for 13 patient conditions, within those programmes that were most commonly identified as offering the greatest potential improvements in the first Commissioning for Value pack. Supporting tools and information are available below.

Data packs on cardiovascular disease – June 2014

Public Health England has also provided a support pack to help CCGs understand variations across their cardiovascular care pathway and get better value from their CVD services.  The evidenced-based packs cover potential opportunities for CCGs to improve patient outcomes, quality and efficiency by identifying which areas to focus on across the pathway and what to change. The packs are available on Public Health England’s website.

Commissioning for Value data packs – October 2013

These original packs showed CCGs and regional teams ‘where to look’ as a first stage to identify real opportunities to improve outcomes and increase value for local populations. Supporting tools and information are available below.

Interactive tools and supporting information – 2016 – Focus Packs

An interactive version of each of the 2016 CCG Focus Packs will also be made available. There will be two views of the data:
