NHS 111 Statistics – March 2015

There were 1,137,856 calls offered to the NHS 111 service in March 2015, or 36,705 per day, similar to 36,679 per day in February 2015.

Of calls answered by NHS 111 in England in March 2015, 92.1% were answered within 60 seconds. This was less than in February 2015 (93.2%) and the average for 2014 (92.9%).

In March 2015, the proportion of calls abandoned after waiting longer than 30 seconds was 1.7%, higher than February (1.4%), but similar to January 2015 and the average for 2014 (both 1.7%).

Of all calls answered, 13% were offered a call back in March 2015, more than February (12%). In each month of 2014 this was 10% or less. Of those offered a call back, 42% were called back within 10 minutes, less than in February (46%) and the average for 2014 (50%).

The mean average episode length of a call was 15 minutes 37 seconds in March 2015, longer than 14 minutes 57 seconds in February 2015, and the average for 2014.

Of calls answered, 86% received triage in March 2015, the same as in the previous four months.

Calls triaged are those where the NHS 111 call handler opens and uses the clinical assessment tool (NHS Pathways). Calls not triaged include, for example, follow-ups of previous calls, or calls where the caller is unable or unwilling to give specific details about the patient’s condition, such as enquiries about contact details for pharmacists or other local care services.

Of calls triaged in March 2015, 11% had ambulances dispatched, 8% were recommended to A&E, 62% were recommended to primary care, 4% were recommended to another service, and 16% were not recommended to any service. For February 2015, these figures were the same.

Of calls offered to NHS 111 in March 2015, 97% dialled 111 directly, the joint largest ever, but also the same proportion as in the previous four months.
