The 2016 NHS Staff Survey in England

The results of the 2016 NHS Staff Survey have been published today by The Co-ordination Centre (Picker Institute Europe) on behalf of NHS England. This is the fourteenth annual national survey of NHS staff.

Since 2013, participating organisations have been able to conduct the survey as a census or extended sample and this option is increasingly being adopted. As a result, over 982,000 staff across 316 NHS organisations were invited to take part in the 2016 survey, more than 242,000 extra staff compared to 2015.

Over 423,000 staff responded to the 2016 survey, a response rate of 44% (compared to around 299,000 respondents in 2015 and a response rate of 41%).

The fieldwork for the survey was carried out between late September and early December 2016.

There was no change to the survey in 2016, so all questions are comparable to 2015. However the substantial revision to the survey in 2015 means that some questions and key findings are not comparable to 2014. A document explaining the changes is available at www.nhsstaffsurveys.com.

The survey results are published for individual questions and for 32 Key Findings that have been designed to give more information about particular areas of interest. Of the 32 Key Findings, 26 have shown improvement since 2015, 3 have deteriorated and 3 have remained the same since 2015.
