What needs to change?

Encompassing the historic towns of Leatherhead, Chertsey and Guildford, the Surrey Heartlands STP will support the health and social care needs of Surrey residents living in the central and western parts of the county. The challenges in Surrey are not unique: a rising elderly population, variation of clinical outcomes across the area, and need for more accessible primary care services have all been recognised as priority areas for the 11 organisations who have come together to develop this local plan.

Over the next 10 years the number of people aged 85+ in Surrey will go up by 36% and by 2025 more than 20% of the population will be aged 65+. To meet the challenges of providing high quality care to an increasingly elderly population, NHS organisations and Surrey County Council are asking for devolved responsibility for health and social care to enable faster and better integration of services.  This would create more local accountability, with services working better together and providing local residents with a high quality and sustainable health and care system.

One Surrey innovation is the creation of the Surrey Heartlands Academy. The Academy, a virtual collaboration, will enable Surrey clinicians to tackle unwarranted variation so that, wherever residents live in Surrey Heartlands, they will know they are receiving the most effective care. The Academy is being developed in partnership with the Kent, Surrey, Sussex Academic Health Science Network, the University of Surrey and Surrey Health Partners, and also working with the health system in Southern Denmark.

What will this mean for local people?

Through the Surrey Heartlands STP local health and social care leaders will have a combined £1.3billion health, social care and public health budget.  Implementing the plan will mean:

  • An additional £30 million invested in primary care services the next five years, giving people more access to GP appointments between 8am and 8pm and at weekends, as well as longer appointment times where necessary so doctors can spend more time treating patients.
  • By 2021, new teams made up of family doctors, nurses, social care practitioners, psychologists and other specialists will mean more patients being seen in one place, with their needs met by health and care professionals working together.
  • More focus on disease prevention;
  • Investing an additional £8 million in cancer services to support earlier diagnosis and increasing cancer survival rates;
  • Investing an additional £3 million in mental health services making it easier for patients to access services.
