East Lancashire devolves rotas and rewrites leave policy
Rota management at East Lancashire has moved from a centralised model to teams embedded within care group management, improving day-to-day responsiveness.
A rewritten annual leave policy agreed through the Joint Local Negotiating Committee now covers all grades of doctors and Foundation Year 2 doctors can now claim accommodation, travel, and course costs when they incur the expenses.
Payroll drop-in sessions launched in May 2026 to make sure pay queries are resolved quickly.
The trust has launched a Sexual Safety policy with mandatory training and promotes the Safe Learning Environment Charter. Exception reporting levels are rising, reflecting growing confidence among resident doctors about raising concerns.
Progress is regularly reviewed through the Resident Doctor Forum, with resident doctors involved in decisions — including how fines fund investments are spent.
Resident doctors are also getting tailored inductions, 24/7 access to food, rest facilities, and a comprehensive wellbeing offer.
On-site accommodation is available for anyone too tired to drive home safely after a shift and several on-call rooms at Burnley General Teaching Hospital have been refurbished.
More work is underway, including new flooring, blackout blinds, new mattresses and better access and signage.
