Bank Holiday health information for Londoners

As we prepare for the August bank holiday, NHS England (London) is sharing important information ahead of the three day weekend, including how Londoners can access health services if they need them.

Although not every GP practice will be open on the bank holiday, Londoners have access to a range of services through out of hours GP access hubs, walk–in centres and NHS 111. In many areas, walk-in clinics and urgent care centres will also be open. To get information about those services, Londoners are advised their local CCG website.

Remember to stock up on repeat prescriptions before the weekend but if you do need to visit a pharmacy, a full list of their opening hours can be downloaded online.

Across the capital, we’re giving patients increased access to GP services out of hours through primary care access hubs. Through these hubs, patients can now book appointments to see a GP in the evening or at weekends from 8-8 across 87% of London. You can book into access hubs by calling NHS 111 or by speaking to your GP practice.

Over the bank holiday weekend, ring NHS111 if you urgently need medical help or advice, but it’s not an emergency. The service is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers, supported by experienced nurses and paramedics and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In an emergency, Londoners should dial 999 or go to A&E.

Professor Oliver Shanley, Regional Chief Nurse for NHS England and NHS Improvement in London said:

“We want all Londoners to stay healthy for the August bank holiday weekend. In the event that we are lucky enough to get some hot weather, please remember to cover up in the sun, stay hydrated and wear sun protection.

“If you do become unwell at any point, Londoners should be reassured that a range of urgent services are in place across the city, with enough resources to respond to any expected demand.”
