Patients in two areas of London are set to benefit from significant improvements to their local NHS services, thanks to a Government capital cash boost.

The announcement, made by the Prime Minister today, pledged almost £30m in additional funding for London – funding much needed for additional intensive care beds and a brand new health and wellbeing centre.

The improvements will support NHS London’s ambition to be the healthiest city in the world and the best city to receive healthcare if you are unwell.

Welcoming today’s announcement Sir David Sloman, NHS London’s regional director, said:

“London’s NHS offers some of the most outstanding healthcare in the world, and it has the most talented staff but our medical facilities do not always match this.

“The much needed funding boost announced today is a significant start towards delivering the hospitals and wider NHS services patients and staff deserve and will undoubtedly improve care in these areas, helping to make London the best city in the world in which to be treated.”

The two areas of London that are set to benefit from today’s announcement:

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust

• £12.7m in funding will enable the much-needed expansion and refurbishment of Croydon University Hospital’s Intensive Treatment and High Dependency Units, which treat patients with the most severe, life threatening conditions.

The Intensive Treatment Unit was built in 1984 and remains largely unchanged – with only routine and essential maintenance being undertaken.

24 new Intensive Care and High Dependency beds, including 4 isolation rooms, will be created along with more en-suite facilities, quiet rooms and waiting areas to support families at times of great distress.

It is expected that the expansion of these units will also help Croydon retain highly trained staff who are keen to work in a thriving, fit for purpose facility that offers the best in patient care.

Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge CCGs and North East London NHS FT

• £17m in funding will provide a new Health and Wellbeing hub on the former St George’s hospital site in Havering.

The health and wellbeing centre will offer vital outpatient clinics, GP services and a joint team of health and social care professionals, as well as space for local voluntary and community groups to use.

With the local population set to increase by 15,000 in the next 10 years, the hub will include a centre of excellence for frail elderly people, offering a wide range of services to keep them well and active, together with a diagnostic centre. The centre is for all local people and families and is set to transform NHS services across North East London.
