Professor Oliver Shanley OBE to stand down as Regional Chief Nurse for the NHS in London

Professor Oliver Shanley OBE will continue as Interim Chief Executive of North East London Foundation Trust until April 2021, having stood down as London’s Chief Nurse at NHS England and Improvement.

The move sees Oliver take up the helm after almost four years working to provide the highest quality of nursing services across the capital.

Oliver took up the role at North East London from former chief executive John Brouder in July 2019. He has worked in a variety of senior leadership roles, leading to his appointment as Chief Nurse for London in 2016 for both NHSE and NHSI, one of only a handful of combined regulatory roles at that time. Throughout that time Oliver has led a number of regional and national initiatives, and in 2016 awarded an OBE for services to nursing.

Sir David Sloman, Regional Director of the NHS in London explained:

“I would like to thank Oliver for his commitment to the role of Regional Chief Nurse and the leadership and role modelling he provided to nurses and midwifes in London. I also want to thank him for his corporate contribution to improving health and wellbeing in the capital.

“I wish Oliver all the best in his work as Interim Chief Executive of North East London Foundation Trust as the NHS continues to benefit from his drive, ambition and passion. He will continue to bring his wealth of experience and expertise to this significant role.”

Jane Clegg and Martin Machray will continue as Acting Joint Regional Chief Nurses for NHS England and Improvement in London.

Oliver Shanley, Chief Executive of North East London Foundation Trust said:

“I feel that I have been enormously privileged throughout my career. I have spent the last three years as Chief Nurse working alongside some incredible nurses. I have never ceased to be amazed by the contribution and dedication of my fellow nurses and wish to thank them for everything they do. I now have an opportunity to return to community and mental health services. I hope that I can contribute to the exciting times ahead for NELFT.”

Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England said:

“As Regional Chief Nurse in London, Oliver provided invaluable leadership of nursing and midwifery across the capital – I’m sure he will continue to deliver incredible work as he continues his role as Interim Chief Executive of North East London Foundation Trust.’
