NHS videos in Chinese languages launched to encourage uptake of Covid-19 vaccine

The NHS in London has released a series of short videos in Chinese languages to reassure and promote confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine among people from Chinese communities.

The videos feature clinicians who live and work in the NHS in London, who give messages about the safety and effectiveness of the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines – plus how to get a jab. The videos have been recorded in Cantonese, Hakka and Mandarin and all are available with both traditional and simplified Chinese subtitles.

Uptake of the vaccine in London amongst the Chinese communities has been lower than in some other communities,  with just over half of those over 18 who identify as Chinese taking up one dose of the vaccine.  It is hoped that these short films, which can be easily downloaded and shared across social networks, will help reassure residents that taking the vaccine will help reduce transmission of the virus and the risk of hospitalisation.

Christine Yau MBE, Chair for the London Chinese Community Centre said:

“We’ve been working closely with our Chinese communities to facilitate take up of the vaccine, to answer concerns and to tackle misinformation.  These videos, filmed by Chinese Londoners who work for the NHS, will help us assure our communities that the vaccine is safe and is London’s best chance to get back to normal.”

All adults in England are now able to get the free COVID-19 vaccine, and more than 9 million vaccinations have now been given in London. People who are registered with a GP can call 119 to book an appointment at a local vaccination clinic, or book online at nhs.uk/covidvaccine.

For those who are not registered with a GP, or would prefer not to book, walk-in appointments are available across London. You do not need proof of immigration status or proof of address to get the vaccine.

For maximum protection, everyone needs two doses. The second dose should ideally be given 8 weeks after the first, and preferably no longer than 12 weeks later.
