NHS London staff recognised in King’s Birthday Honours list
The NHS in London is proud to celebrate colleagues recognised in today’s King’s Birthday Honours list, a testament to the remarkable talent at the heart of the capital’s health system.
From intensive care and palliative nursing, to healthcare research, education and innovation, these individuals have been honoured for their extraordinary efforts to improve the lives of Londoners.
Sir James Mackey, Chief Executive of NHS England said: “His Majesty the King’s Birthday Honours are a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the NHS colleagues who go above and beyond every single day to improve care for their patients and communities.
“It is fantastic to see so many of our London colleagues honoured for their remarkable contributions – from Professor Tim Orchard’s pioneering work in research and innovation, to the nurses transforming palliative and intensive care – we are truly grateful for the dedication and compassion they bring to everything they do.”
Dame Caroline Clarke, London Regional Director for NHS England, said: “I’m delighted to congratulate all of our NHS, health and care colleagues, across London, recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours. Each of them is a fantastic example of the dedication, innovation and tireless commitment that defines the very best of our NHS. These honours are thoroughly deserved and their work is making a real difference to patients and communities right across London.”
Professor Tim Orchard has been appointed CBE for ‘Services to the NHS and Healthcare Research and Innovation’. As Group Chief Executive for North West London Acute Provider Group and Professor of Gastroenterology at Imperial College London, Timothy is a pioneering force for research and innovation, translating world-class science into real improvements in patient care.
He said: “I’m so proud of what our team has achieved at Imperial College Healthcare over the past eight years with – and for – our patients and local communities. Formally coming together with our acute provider partners across north west London is now helping all of us to deliver even more and this Honour provides a wonderful, additional boost!”
Professor Dame Kumar has been awarded a Knights Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire for her services to global medical education and health. A graduate of St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, one of Queen Mary’s four founding institutions, Parveen worked in the NHS, including at Barts Health NHS Trust, specialising in gastroenterologist for many years.
In addition to working in hospitals, Parveen spent a large component of her career educating medical students, including at Queen Mary, and improving medical education more broadly. She teaches, lectures and examines medical students, trainees and refugee doctors, is a senior examiner for the MRCP, MBBS and other post-graduate degrees at home and abroad and was the academic sub-dean and later Director of Postgraduate Medical Education for Queen Mary’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
As a University College London Partners board member for 16 years, and Chair for two, Dominic Dodd was appointed CBE for ‘Services to the NHS’ today.
He said: “I’ve always shared the view that one of our greatest achievements as a country was to commit to the NHS principle – that the best healthcare should be there for all. It’s been such a privilege over the last 20 years to have worked with so many wonderful people who have dedicated their working lives to that principle, and to the difficult combination of day-to-day service and year-on-year reinvention it demands.
“I am confident that today, with so many advances, and with courageous leadership and partnership at all levels, the best healthcare for all is now more achievable in practice than it has ever been.”
A Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and Professor of Critical Care at Imperial College London, has received an MBE. Professor Stephen Brett was awarded the title for his ‘Services to Critical Illness and Intensive Care Medicine’.
He said: “I was delighted to discover I had been nominated for an award. Throughout my time at the Trust, I have been fortunate to work with countless excellent people who have helped me to improve health and care for our patients and for the wider community of patients and professionals. It has been rewarding to play a role in raising awareness of intensive care medicine and critical illness, and the difficulties faced by patients during and after severe illness.”
Macmillan Nurse Consultant, Dr Diane Laverty, was also awarded an MBE for her ‘Services to Palliative Care Nursing’ at London Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
She said: “I am truly flattered and honoured to be recognised in this way. I’ve loved every role I have undertaken in my career and what has made it worthwhile is making a difference to patients and working with so many incredible colleagues.”
In North East London, Paul Rawlinson, the previous Chair of Barts Health Charity, received an MBE for ‘Services to Health Sector Charities’.
He said: “I am humbled to be recognised in the King’s birthday honours list. It was a privilege to spend 10 years working with the team at Barts Charity, the last five of these as Chair. The Charity exists to work with Barts Health NHS Trust and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, and support them in their efforts to improve health outcomes for people in East London. It was an honour to help, and incredibly rewarding to put all my years of experience to such a worthwhile challenge.”
Fiona Miller Smith, Chief Executive of Barts Charity, said: “It was an honour and a privilege to work with Paul while he was Chair of Barts Charity. He was totally committed to our mission and was determined that we did everything with a laser-focus on changing lives in East London and beyond. The projects he helped develop while he was Chair are delivering incredible impact like the Youth Resilience Unit in Newham, and the Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing at Whipps Cross Hospital. It is wonderful that his passion has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.”
