Don’t delay – book your booster vaccine appointment today

Health bosses in the South West are urging those eligible for the Covid-19 booster vaccination to book an appointment as soon as they are invited.

With infection rates increasing across the region, the booster vaccination is vital in maintaining protection against severe Covid-19 through the winter months as well as protecting your friends and family.

Dr Julie Yates, Lead Consultant for Screening and Immunisations, at NHS England and NHS Improvement South West, said:

“It’s important we don’t become complacent about Covid-19. Vaccine uptake for the first two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine was great, but we need those who are eligible to book their booster now.

“The booster gives people that are most likely to become seriously ill from Covid-19, and those who care for them, the best possible protection.

“With infection rates, hospital admissions and deaths increasing across the region, it is vital that you book your booster vaccination as soon as you are invited.”

Those eligible for a booster Covid-19 vaccination include everyone aged 50 and over, frontline health and social care workers and those aged between 16 and 49 with an underlying health condition which puts them at greater risk from the virus.

Invitation letters will be sent to those eligible asking them book an appointment at least 6 months after their second dose via the national booking system website or by calling 119. If someone has not been contacted and it’s been six months and one week (190 days) since their second dose, please try to book an appointment using the booking website or by calling 119. People may also be contacted by their GP and invited to book an appointment.

Dr Yates added: “It is safe for the Covid-19 and flu vaccine to be administered at the same appointment. However, please do not wait for a clinic that offers both. When you are invited to book for your Covid-19 or flu vaccines you should book these in straight away, even if it means receiving these vaccines at different appointments.”

If you are eligible but haven’t yet had your first or second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, you can still take up the offer by using the national booking system (www.nhs.uk/covidvaccination or call 119) to get an appointment or visit a drop in clinic.
