“Bowel cancer screening saved my life.” – As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, South West patient, Kitty Odell, reflects on her experience
Kitty Odell from Bristol was fit and healthy when she received her third bowel cancer screening home test as part of the routine screening offer provided by the NHS to people in the South West who are aged 50 to 74.
Without any concerning symptoms, Kitty left the test on the side for several weeks before deciding to complete it. “I went and put it in the post box and a couple of weeks later I got a letter to say they needed some further tests – which took me completely by surprise.”
Kitty was then diagnosed with bowel cancer and now wants to share her experience to encourage others to return their bowel cancer screening tests, even if they don’t have symptoms.
“It couldn’t be easier. You don’t even have to go and pick it up; it comes through your letter box. I really feel absolutely passionately that everybody needs to just do the test.”
During 1 April to 30 June 2024, nearly 30% of eligible people in the South West did not complete their bowel cancer screening home test within the screening period. Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and screening tests can help to find cancer early, even before symptoms occur. Detecting bowel cancer early can make it easier to treat.
“When you get the test, please just do it. Don’t put it on the side, don’t put it in the drawer, don’t put it off, just do it and send it back – it can save your life.”
“Go to the loo and follow the instructions. There are three or four steps, and then once you’ve done it you just put it back in the envelope and then take it down to your post office and put it in the post box. It could not be easier.”
Bowel cancer screening test kits are automatically sent by post every two years to everyone aged 50 to 74 who is registered with a GP. The test is quick and easy and can be completed from the comfort of your own home before being returned for free. You’ll then receive the results of the test in the post.
