NHS urges South West patients not to delay care during strikes
Patients across the South West are being urged to continue accessing NHS care as usual during next week’s resident doctors’ strikes.
Industrial action will take place from 7:00am on Monday 15 June until 6:59am on Friday 19 June 2026 — the 16th round of strikes since March 2023, which coincides with higher temperatures on the way and the start of the football World Cup.
The walkout comes as the South West enters its busy summer period, with additional demand expected from hot weather, higher visitor numbers across the region, and increased activity around England’s opening World Cup match on Wednesday, (June 17) which may all increase pressure on our services.
Despite these pressures, NHS colleagues have robust plans in place to keep essential services running and patients safe. Emergency care, NHS 111, GP practices and pharmacies will all remain open, and patients should attend planned appointments unless contacted directly to rearrange.
Dr Trevor Smith, Regional Medical Director for NHS England in the South West, said: “As resident doctors take further strike action, I want to thank NHS teams across the South West for their continued hard work to keep patients safe during a busy period.
“Our priority remains to provide safe care and keep essential services running, so please don’t delay if you need urgent or emergency help.
“If you have an appointment, please attend as planned unless you are told otherwise.”
Professor Frankie Swords, National Medical Director at NHS England, added:
“The NHS remains open during this period of industrial action, with staff doing everything they can to minimise disruption.
“With hotter weather and the World Cup, it will be a ‘triple whammy’ of pressure — but staff will continue to ensure people get the care they need.
“Stay cool, keep hydrated and seek help when needed — especially if you are more vulnerable. In an emergency call 999 or attend A&E, and use 111 online first for urgent but non-life-threatening support.”
