Kent and Medway area team

The Kent and Medway Area Team is the local arm of NHS England and we are committed to improving health, reducing health inequalities and improving the healthcare experience for the 1.7 million people who live in Kent and Medway.

We work closely with the eight local clinical commissioning groups, supporting them to be the best they can be as they use their local knowledge and understanding of patients’ needs to commission a wide range of community and hospital services. We also work closely with the two local authorities and their Health and Wellbeing Boards to ensure services are developed to meet local needs.

We have a direct commissioning role for the following specific areas:

• Primary care – general practice (GP), dental, pharmacy and optometry services
• Public health – screening and immunisation
• Offender health services (healthcare in prisons). We also commission these services on behalf of the Surrey and Sussex area

Specialised services are commissioned on behalf of the Kent and Medway Area Team by the Surrey and Sussex Area Team at NHS England.

Armed Forces Health is commissioned on behalf of the South by the Bath, Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire area team.

As part of NHS England, we deliver a system oversight role, supporting partnership working, quality and safety. The Area Team is the health system lead for emergency preparedness, resilience and response and we work closely with partners through the Local Health Resilience Partnership and have representation on the local Urgent Care Boards.
