Lifesaving Spring covid jabs to offer protection for vulnerable people in the East of England
Eligible older people and those with a weakened immune system in the East of England can now get potentially life-saving protection from COVID-19 with NHS spring vaccinations starting this week.
Over 2 million appointments are now available across the East of England up until 29 June, at GP practices and community pharmacies for people who are 75 and over, older people in care homes and people who are immunosuppressed.
COVID-19 spreads easily all year round and can be very dangerous and even life threatening for vulnerable groups.
Protection from a previous vaccination can fade over time and the circulating strain of the virus can change, so if you are at higher risk of severe illness, it is important to top up your protection and prevent potential hospital admission.
On Thursday as part of the Covid-19 Inquiry, a report by Baroness Hallett cited one study which estimated that by March 2023, Covid vaccines had saved the lives of 475,000 people in England and Scotland.
People who are eligible for their spring Covid vaccination will be invited to come forward by the NHS, but you do not need to wait for this to book.
You can download the NHS App and make an appointment, book online, visit a walk-in site or call 119 for free if you can’t get online.
Dr Eleanor Powers, Head of Public Health Commissioning (Immunisation) for NHS England – East of England, said:
“As summer approaches with warmer weather and longer days, it is sometimes hard to imagine getting COVID, but it is an all-year-round disease, and continues to be a serious illness – especially for older people and anyone with a weakened immune system. In our region there are nearly a million eligible adults, so with over 2 million appointments available, you will be able to find the most convenient appointment for you.
“Previous immunity wears off over time – whether that’s from having had the virus before, or the vaccine – so it’s vital those at the greatest risk of becoming seriously unwell top up their protection.
“Anyone aged 75 or over, those in a care home for older adults, or anyone who has a weakened immune system is eligible for a jab this spring.
“The NHS is contacting these individuals via text, email, NHS App messages or by letter but you don’t need to wait for an invite – just visit the NHS website, use the NHS App or call 119 now to book your appointment.”
