Ho-ho-holiday health tips for Londoners this festive season

As the capital gets ready for the festive holidays, here are a few health tips from NHS England (London) to help you stay well.

Well before the presents are opened and the crackers are pulled, collect repeat prescriptions so no-one runs out of medication.  It’s also a good idea to ensure medicine cabinets are well-stocked to deal with minor ailments like stomach upsets and coughing.  And remember, it’s not too late to ask about having a flu jab to help protect you this winter.

If you do feel unwell, medical help will be available.  Primary care hubs have been set up across the capital so Londoners can get appointments when their GP practice is closed and at times that are convenient. Further hubs are in development, and will go live across the city over the next year. Call NHS111 for more information and for help with booking an appointment.

In many areas, walk-in clinics and urgent care centres will be open. To get information about those services, check your local CCG website.

Pharmacists can advise you on minor ailments like sore throats and coughing – view a full list of pharmacies that are open over the holidays – or ring NHS111 if you need medical help fast, but it’s not a life-threatening situation.  The service is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers, supported by experienced GPs, nurses and paramedics and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In an emergency, Londoners should dial 999 or go to A&E.

Dr Mark Spencer of NHS England (London) said: “While we hope everyone remains fit and healthy over the festive break, there are a few things Londoners can do now to help ensure a great time without any worries.  Keep warm, collect your repeat prescriptions and stock up your medicine cabinet.

“In case they do take ill, contact 111 for advice if the normal treatments from the pharmacist aren’t helping, and be assured that we have been working with services across the capital so that everyone can access the most appropriate care.”
