Community Diagnostic Centres helping thousands more patients access tests in the Midlands without visiting hospital

  • Almost 1.5 million patients visited community diagnostic centres (CDCs) in the Midlands for convenient local access to scans, tests and checks

  • 21 of the 100 Community Diagnostic Centres across the country now offering out of hours services 12 hours a day, seven days a week, are based in the Midlands

An increasing number of patients across the Midlands are receiving diagnostic tests in more convenient locations, as more Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) are now open in the evenings and on weekends.

Since July 2024 Midlands CDCs have delivered almost 1.5 million tests and scans in local settings like shopping centres, community hospitals, and university campuses.

Both Grantham and Lincoln CDCs have helped deliver a rapid access lung cancer service, where chest X-rays are delivered to specialists the same day they are requested, followed by a CT scan within 72 hours.

Dr Jessica Sokolov, Regional Medical Director for NHS England – Midlands, said: “Community Diagnostic Centres are not only a game changing service for convenient access to tests, they also allow patients to get more than one test in a single visit, which is helping to improve waiting times as well as reduce inconvenient hospital appointments for busy working people and their families.”

With CDCs offering longer opening hours then typical hospital clinics, some centres have forecast that they can see over 10 per cent more patients.

Community Diagnostic Centres are a part of the government’s Plan for Change to transform care, moving it out of hospital and into the community. By speeding up diagnosis and treatment they reduce pressure on hospitals and put patients at ease faster.
