Hayley Crawford – Theatre Coordinator – Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS FT

Theatre Coordinator Year nurse Midwife

Name and role

Hayley Crawford, Theatre Coordinator

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

On a typical day

My shift times vary each day. At the beginning of my day I deal with any immediate pressures, including theatre lists, staffing, patient flow and availability of theatre kits, ensuring safety of staff and patients.

I work closely with business support teams to address priority patients, with the equipment services team to ensure availability of necessary equipment and the external robotics team if any issues arise with the robotics.

My role also includes a range of administrative duties such as rotas, payroll and sickness. Training junior staff forms part of my day and I always have an ‘open door’ policy to help with any immediate issues or queries.

At the end of the working day I always check that everything is ready for the next day and thank staff for all they had done that day.

The role is very busy but I enjoy what I do and get a lot of satisfaction from it.

How I’ve made a difference as a nurse or midwife

My strength is in training others. I have very high standards and expect others to work to those standards.

It gives me a great deal of pleasure knowing that by sharing my knowledge it improves the experience for patients and my colleagues.

What would you say to a young person interested in a career in nursing & midwifery?

Go for it. If it’s in your nature to care and you work hard you will flourish. There are so many opportunities available.

This role is not just a job, but part of who you are.

It is not an easy career as nursing is a 24 hour service. However, if you are committed to providing best patient experience and support your colleagues, you will get a great deal back from all that you do.
