Danielle Dobson – Staff Nurse on MAU (Medical Admissions Unit)

Year of the nurse and midwife - Lancashire Teaching Hospitals

Name and role

Danielle Dobson, Staff Nurse on MAU (Medical Admissions Unit)

On a typical day…

I am usually one of the admissions nurses on MAU. I start at 7:30am and help on the ward area of MAU, then I return to our admissions area where I help triage new admissions, take bloods and ECGs, complete risk assessments and care plans and begin their treatment. I see patients when they are at their sickest and most vulnerable and try to give them timely treatment before moving them down to a bed on MAU or on a specialist ward.

One way I’ve made a difference as a nurse or midwife

I am currently in the process of developing a role on MAU to help staff members understand more about mental health, psychosis and dementia. I am completing an MSc in Mental Health Science to try and help bridge the gap between Medical health and Mental Health – we typically see them as separate issues when in fact they are more intertwined than we believe. I am also an LBGTQ champion and regularly advocate for these patient’s.

What would you say to a young person interested in a career in nursing & midwifery?

Nursing in our current political climate is tough, there is no doubt about that; the demands of our job are ever increasing. However, if you are passionate about giving the best possible care and being an advocate for your patients you will absolutely thrive. Find out what kind of nursing you love, stay positive and be an ambassador for change – you will be amazing.
