North West NHS staff recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

The region’s top nurse and lead for global workforce, education and research were among NHS Staff from the North West recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list.

As the NHS approaches its milestone 75th birthday next month, the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours have been awarded to a wide range of NHS doctors, nurses and other staff who have made a significant contribution to healthcare.

Hayley Citrine, NHS England North West’s former Chief Nurse, who currently sits on the board of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS FT as a Non-Executive Director, was awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to nursing, after 37 years working in the NHS.

In addition, Dr Rosemary McCarthy, Head of Global Workforce, Education and Research at NHS England, and currently an Honorary Midwifery Lecturer at the University of Salford, has also been awarded the honour of MBE for services to midwifery and maternity healthcare.

Regional Director for NHS England North West, Richard Barker, has praised Hayley Citrine for her dedication and hard work. He said: “I am absolutely delighted to see the contribution of a member of our own NHS North West regional team rightly recognised in The King’s Birthday Honours list.

“Hayley has made a huge contribution to the NHS in the North West over the years in a range of senior posts and most recently in response to response to the national pandemic throughout which her leadership was invaluable.

“We are all proud to see her honoured for the compassion, insight and expertise she brought to the role of regional chief nurse and I want to offer my personal congratulations to Hayley and everyone working in the NHS and care sector receiving a greatly deserved honour at this time.”

Speaking about receiving the honour, Hayley said: “It has been a privilege to work in the NHS for nearly four decades and to be recognised with this MBE is an incredible personal honour, but one earned with the support of my family and colleagues. Nursing and the National Health Service has given me such a fulfilling and enjoyable career and I am pleased to represent our profession in this years’ honours.”

Dr Navina Evans, Chief Workforce, Training and Education Officer at NHS England, has congratulated Rosemary McCarthy on her MBE. She said: “I wanted to express my warmest congratulations to Rose for her MBE in The King’s 2023 Birthday Honours List.

“This is a much deserved accolade recognising her services to Midwifery and Maternity Healthcare. I am delighted to see her outstanding achievements have been marked in such a fitting way.”

List this year and receive this award on behalf of the Facemums team and fabulous NHS staff across the country who expertly and with sheer dedication care for us throughout our lives every day.”
