NHS urges people to come forward for RSV vaccine ahead of virus peak
People at greatest risk from becoming seriously ill from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) this winter are being urged to get vaccinated ahead of the expected peak.
Data from UKHSA shows that in 2023, the number of hospital admissions related to RSV peaked in the middle of November, and the same is expected this year, during what is already an incredibly busy time for NHS services.
More than 77,000 people in the North West have already come forward for the life-saving vaccine since the programme began on 1 September 2024 and others are being urged to come forward when invited by the NHS.
Although RSV can occur all year round, the number of people becoming seriously unwell and needing hospital care increases significantly in winter, making it even more important for eligible people, including pregnant women and those aged 75, to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Pregnant women are offered the RSV vaccine from 28 weeks of pregnancy. The vaccine is safe and effect and is the best way to protect pregnant women and their baby as it passes on protection to the baby for the first few months of their life. Pregnant women can speak to their midwife or GP practice to find out more information and where they can get the vaccine.
People aged 75 are also eligible for the vaccine, and those aged between 75-79 can get the vaccine now as part of a catch-up programme.
Tricia Spedding, Head of Public Health for NHS England North West, said: “Vaccines are our best defence against viruses and illnesses and will help reduce the number of hospital admissions this winter, when pressure on our NHS is increased.
“Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and those around you so if you are eligible, join the tens of thousands already vaccinated in the North West and take up the offer as soon as possible.”
The NHS is also offering winter vaccines for other viruses to those at greatest risk which cause the most harm during winter, including flu and COVID-19, as the NHS sets out plans for protection of people who are at greatest risk ahead of winter.
