NHS asks students to consider a career in health care

The NHS in North East and Yorkshire is encouraging young people to consider a rewarding career in the NHS.

This Thursday is A level results day and as students consider their future career options the NHS wants to highlight the hundreds of varied roles available to suit everyone.   As well as hospital based roles in medical and nursing and allied professions, there is now over 15 different career roles within General Practice including social prescribing link workers, physiotherapists, receptionists, care navigators, pharmacists, and nursing associates.

Shiv Mistry, a Clinical Pharmacist in Leeds said:

“I chose to become a pharmacist because I’ve always had an interest in medications and the way they treat conditions. I’ve got a couple of members of family who are also pharmacists, so I’ve got that experience and that exposure through them and observing what they do and how they interact with patients on a daily basis.

“Within my role, the thing I like the most is the interaction I have with patients, being able to make significant changes to people’s medications and treatments to help improve their quality of life.”

Rob Southern, First Contact Physio, at Leeds Community Healthcare Trust explains what he likes most about his job:

“The things I really like most about being a physio are working out what is going on with a person’s musculoskeletal system and also helping the patient understand it in their terms and how they go about managing it.”

Dr Yvette Oade, Regional Medical Director (Acting), NHS England, North East and Yorkshire said:

“The NHS is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding places to work, where you can make a real difference to people’s lives.

“There are so many different roles available and the NHS will always need new people to join. Working in the NHS is a fulfilling and varied career – making it a strong choice for anyone considering their options at the moment.”

A recent campaign launched in the region around General Practice called “Meet your General Practice Team”, showcases the different roles available and how they can help patients.
