Supporters in North East and Yorkshire urged to go into World Cup ‘match fit’ by topping up protection against Covid and flu

Kick off your World Cup viewing with the best possible defence against some of the viruses that often circulate in crowded places, a senior public health director for NHS North East and Yorkshire has urged.

With pitch-side action in Qatar set to begin this Sunday (20 November) there has never been a better time for football supporters in our region, their friends and families to get their Covid or flu vaccinations, says Dr Kev Smith, Regional Director of Public Health Commissioning.

“We know the World Cup will bring the whole counDr Kev Smith, Regional Director of Public Health Commissioningtry together, with millions gathering in pubs and rooms to cheer on their team,” Dr Smith (pictured) said. “We also know that crowds are what viruses like best, whether it is the common cold, flu or even Covid.

“So the best possible defence against these viruses will be vital in the coming weeks. If you are eligible for a Covid or flu vaccination, please make sure you are going into the month-long tournament ‘match fit’ by topping up your protection.”

With the flu virus already circulating, and Covid never having gone away, there is a real threat of a ‘twindemic’ in what could be one of the toughest winters the NHS has faced, Dr Smith said.

“We are making it easier than ever for people to get their Covid and flu jabs and they can book using the National Booking Service or by calling 119,” he added.

“The vaccines remain the best protection against serious illness and hospitalisation, so if you are eligible please take up the offer because the risk of Covid and flu is significant. By getting vaccinated against serious illness you’ll also be playing a vital part in helping to avoid added pressure on NHS hospitals this winter.”

NHS figures show that since the national vaccination campaign was launched in September, more than half the 4.6 million people in the North East and Yorkshire eligible to receive the autumn booster have come forward.

Dr Smith added: “So take a shot for your team so you can enjoy the World Cup – along with Christmas and the New Year.”
