Flu vaccinations: North East and Yorkshire region hits 3 million milestone

As new weekly data shows more than 3 million flu vaccinations have been delivered to people in the North East and Yorkshire, a senior NHS public health director says it’s vital people eligible for the vaccine continue to come forward for protection against the risk of serious illness.

Dr Kev Smith, Regional Director of Public Health Commissioning at NHS North East and Yorkshire, welcomed the latest figures which show almost 3.1 million seasonal flu vaccines have been delivered to people in this region – contributing to a total of 19.1 million vaccines in England.

“The NHS flu vaccination programme continues to make great strides in protecting the public and it’s really encouraging to see the strong response of people in the North East and Yorkshire who’ve come forward for their vaccinations to protect themselves and those around them,” Dr Smith said.

“As we go through winter and spend more time indoors, respiratory diseases become more prevalent so it is vital we protect ourselves and others. For most people flu is unpleasant, but for some it can be dangerous and even life-threatening, particularly those with certain health conditions.

“The flu vaccine is needed every year because the viruses that cause flu change every year. Evidence shows vaccination against flu viruses can make symptoms less severe and long-lasting, helping you to get back on your feet sooner.”

Dr Mike Gent, Yorkshire and Humber Deputy Director at UK Health Security Agency, added:

“I’m pleased we’ve seen positive support from so many families for vaccination in the region.

“However, for those who haven’t yet taken up the offer, I strongly urge parents to book the vaccine at their GP surgery as soon as possible, as young children are particularly vulnerable to becoming very poorly from flu which is now circulating at higher levels than recent years.”

The NHS is offering seasonal flu vaccine – as well as a booster vaccine against Covid-19 – to those at greater risk. Everyone aged 50 and over, pregnant women, care home residents, people with certain health conditions that put them at greater risk and frontline health and care staff are eligible to receive it. In addition, those groups most at risk of getting seriously ill from flu or of passing it to others – such as young children, primary and some secondary school children – are also being offered vaccine protection.

People eligible for the free flu vaccine can book an appointment at their GP surgery or a pharmacy that offers it on the NHS. School-aged children will get their flu vaccine through schools and community venues.
